February 14 is celebrated as Valentine's Day. It is also called as St. Valentine's Day. Lovers express their affection with flowers, greeting cards and other romantic gifts on this day. On this day, people send greeting cards called valentines to their sweethearts, friends, and members of their families.

The day is popular in the United States as well as in Britain, Canada, and Australia, and it is also celebrated in other countries, including France and Mexico. It has expanded to expressions of affection among relatives and friends. Many schoolchildren exchange valentines with one another on this day. Youngsters like this day because this is the only day being celebrated in the name of love and romance.

In fact there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, but the day probably took its name from a priest who was martyred about AD 270 by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter to his jailer's daughter, whom he had befriended and with whom he had fallen in love, "from your Valentine."

The holiday also had origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. It is well known that at the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine's Day. Then it came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century.

Formal messages, or valentines, appeared in the 1500s, and by the late 1700s commercially printed cards were being used. The first commercial valentines in the United States were printed in the mid-1800s. Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion. Because it was thought that their mating season began in mid-February, birds also became a symbol of the day. Traditional gifts include candy and flowers, particularly red roses, a symbol of beauty and love.

It is the right time to strengthen your relationship with your partner. Nowadays this particular day has been very much commercialized. The Germans are known to have printed New Year's greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and handmade paper Valentines were being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s.

By the 1850s, the greeting card had been transformed from a relatively expensive, handmade and hand-delivered gift to a popular and affordable means of personal communication. Thanks to new advances in printing and mechanization. This was followed by new trends like Christmas cards, the first of which appeared in published form in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole hired artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card that he could send to his friends and acquaintances. In the 1860s, companies like Marcus Ward & Co, Goodall and Charles Bennett began the mass production of greeting cards. They employed well-known artists such as Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane as illustrators and card designers.

There are two major categories of greeting cards, one is mass produced ( printed on offset printing machines etc.) and other is handmade greeting cards. Hand painted greeting cards is also a separate category of greeting cards. These cards are also available but this type of cards can not be mass- produced as each card has to be individually painted. Not long ago I found myself in a stationary store, looking for a last minute birthday card before I made my way to the party. There was no shortage of beautiful, humorous, and creative cards to choose from, but the prices on the back of these lovely cards made me wince! If I'd been more organized, I would have had a homemade card of my own ready to go. But on this occasion, I was caught unprepared. At the end of the day my local retailer was a few dollars richer and I was a few dollars poorer.

Now a few dollars isn't much in itself, but if you multiply a few dollars by the number of friends and family members you give cards to every year, it can really start to add up. If you plan ahead and use a little creativity, you can save a lot of money by giving homemade cards instead of commercial ones. Now before you move on to the next article because a) you're not artistic, b) you think homemade cards are cheap or somehow second-rate, or c) you just don't have the time, let me say a few important things.

First of all, you don't have to be artistic to make attractive greeting cards. Really. Just check out some of the simple ideas below. Secondly, your homemade cards are going to be handcrafted works of art that say you really care, not that you're cheap. Finally, while some designs can be quite time-consuming, there are also many simple, quick ideas you can use to make lovely cards. But don't be like me and leave it to the last minute. It pays to plan ahead, making your cards in advance when you have a little free time and you're in the mood to do something creative anyway.

Materials: Now, if you're trying to save money by making your own cards, spending a lot on materials is obviously self-defeating. I collect and keep the following cheap or free materials for my card-making sessions:

· Discontinued wallpaper books requested from paint and home decorating
stores (to be honest I bought mine for a dollar a piece at a thrift store).
· Off-cuts and sample papers from a local printer.
· Bits of attractive paper culled from my junk mail.
· Pictures from magazines, calendars and greeting cards.
· Family photographs - free doubles and the ones which didn't quite work out.
· Little bits of ribbon, fabric, cotton balls, brass fasteners etc.

I also have a bulk package of good quality paper, which has lasted me for years. You can also buy poster board (poster size card stock) for just a dollar or two that you can cut up to make a number of cards.

Ideas: If you're not sure how to start, paper craft books available through the library are an excellent source of ideas. You can also borrow ideas from commercial or handcrafted cards, customizing them for your own purposes. The following list includes some things I've done or plan to do:

· Potato prints of Christmas trees and stars - but any simple shape will do.
Think hearts, ladybugs, sailboats, or simple flowers.
· Stencils (the ones you used to decorate your kitchen) or ink stamps.
· Small paper collages, attractive or humorous- I'm planning on making a
birthday card for my young niece with a cutout photo of her head attached to
a princess's body cut out from a recycled card. You could cut out a photo of
your Aunt Eunice and paste her onto a mermaid, into a sunset scene, or
among a flock of penguins.
· Simple fabric or paper shapes cut out and machine sewed to the card with
thread of a contrasting color - I've sewn very simple hearts for
Valentine's Day and more elaborate (and time-consuming!) for Christmas.
· Carefully torn shapes 'artistically' pasted to your card - I made an
attractive starfish card by taking a pretty textured paper, drawing a star
outline on the back, and carefully tearing it out and pasting it to the
front of my card.
· Simple designs punched out with a nail and then 'embroidered' with metallic
thread, yarn, or ribbon. I've seen beautiful star and snowflake cards at
craft shows.
· A photo of the person you're sending the card to cut out and pasted on the
inside, with a 'window' cut out on the front so the person's face is visible.
· A nice picture or personal photo pasted to the front of the card - when I do
this I layer my picture on top of a piece of contrasting paper slightly
bigger than the picture and slightly smaller than the card to give the
picture a frame.
· Use cotton from a cotton ball to make a slightly three-dimensional snowman
or sheep.
· Glue on dried flowers or leaves. One year I made Christmas cards by gluing
on small, flat cedar tips that looked like miniature trees. I added a gold
star at the top of each tree, and glued on a few sequins for decorations.
· Glue on a simple square or rectangle shape (cut out from a scrap of pretty
wrapping paper) and top it with a small real ribbon bow. For a baby shower,
cut out a simple outline of a rattle and glue on a ribbon of the appropriate
color.

Envelopes: You can make envelopes to hold your creations using an existing envelope as a template or following the directions in a paper craft book, or you can use commercial envelopes. In the past most of my envelopes were recycled from cards that were given to our family. Many of them were left blank and were easy to use again, but I also occasionally pasted something over a name, especially if I was giving the card to a close family member who I knew wouldn't mind receiving a recycled envelope. Now most of my envelopes come from my sister-in-law. She approaches a few obliging retailers right before a holiday like Mother's Day or Easter, and asks if they'd mind saving her some of the envelopes from the cards they don't sell and plan to send back or destroy. She's received piles of free envelopes this way, in different sizes, shapes and colors. Remember that it never hurts to ask!
Before you seal your creation and send it away, don't forget to add your signature or personal logo to the back of your one-of-a-kind card. Happy crafting!

Making Your Own Greeting Cards

Card making is a popular craft that anyone can enjoy without spending alot of money. Most of the supplies needed for card making can be found in your home. Look in your childrens' rooms or school bags and you should be able to gather the basic tools and materials.

Listed below are some basic card making supplies that you need to make your first card.

1. A4 size white cardstock
2. double-sided foam tape
3. a pair of scissors
4. color pencils, watercolors, or crayons
5. steel ruler
6. knife cutter
7. rubber stamp
8. black inkpad
9. black writing pen

First, cut the white cardstock into 2 pieces. Fold one piece of cardstock into half at the centre to make a single-fold 4" x 6" greeting card and put it aside. Then ink your rubber stamp with the black inkpad and stamp on the other piece of white cardstock. Color the stamped image and trim around the black outline. Now attach the colored image onto the front of the single-fold card with double-sided foam tape. Place it in the middle of the top portion of the card. And finally, write a greeting below the stamped image. And voila ... your first handmade greeting card.

Now make more of these cards. Put them in C6 size envelopes and send them to your friends. Let them know how much you love and treasure them and their friendship.

When it comes to sending holiday cards, the road is full of potential potholes for businesses and individuals. Here are 10 tips for delivering successful, stress-free season's greetings.

First, some tips for the company:

1. Since you're making a list, check it twice - carefully. Make sure each person you're sending a card to is still a valued client, supplier, or friend of the company.

2. Check the spelling of everyone's name. People are likely to remember seeing their name misspelled long after the card has been thrown away.

3. Check the address to be sure it's current.

4. Remember that holiday cards are a bit more personal than the usual business correspondence, so don't use them to sell products or services.

5. Beware of messages containing religious overtones. This is the time for an inclusive greeting that focuses on thanking people for the past year and offering best wishes for the year to come.

6. Sending cards via e-mail may seem like a simple solution, but it can backfire. First, you can never be sure your card will actually reach the intended recipient. Spam blockers often prevent even the most innocuous-looking e-mail from getting through. In addition, the recipient has to print the card to display it. Think how your card, printed on 20-lb. white stock, will look next to other people's cards that have been printed on heavier, high-quality paper.

7. The person in charge of addressing cards will be forever grateful for this tip: Labels or printed addresses are acceptable. You really don't have to hand-address every envelope.

8. Decide what's reasonable for you. Start by determining how much you can afford to spend on cards, then make a list of recipients. Review who sent cards to you last year, as well as any new people you want to add to the list.

Whenever you need to wish your friend or acquaintances happy and belated birthday, or wish your near and dear ones merry Christmas, or send your beloved one happy valentines day wishes or just say hello or give a “get well soon” message to your bosom friend , you just go to a greetings card outlet or visit an online greetings card website and send the desired card. Have you ever wondered what greetings card is all about and how did it originate. If you have the desire to know, this article is for you.

So, lets start with what is a greeting card. Originally, greeting cards derive from postcards ( which are single sided without the fold ) and are an illustrated, folded card usually featuring a message of greeting or other sentiment. They can be either printed or handmade. Now, with the advent of Internet though, virtual greetings cards have evolved which doesnot fit into the above-mentioned definition. Although greeting cards are usually given on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas or other holidays, they are also sent on 'non-occasions' to say 'hello' or 'thank you'. They are manufactured and/or hand-made by hundreds of companies big and small.

1. handmade and premium cards
2. mass-manufactured cards
3. e-cards

So, this is all about how the greetings card industry begun and flourished. Though the current trend is to send greetings through e-cards, there is the need to sustain the traditional greetings card industry and maintaining the age-old tradition of sending greetings card via conventional means.

All of us are becoming immune to the joy of birthdays. Unless it is our birthday, we show no interest in others to a great extent. Most of us have a list of friends and family members and on their birthday, we search the Internet, pick up an ecard and send it. Our duty is over.

If by mistake, we miss the birthday, we will send a belated birthday wishes card. How do we expect to develop and maintain close relations with this kind of approach? Birthday cards can cement any relationship beyond imagination. Please use this occasion to do that. Every birthday comes only once a year. Don’t be sloppy on that day. When we want to gift a greetings card to a friend we think a lot. What are the criteria to select a correct card so that the person who gets it will be very happy to see it? One of these is the color you select for the card.

But which color we should select? Everybody likes different colors. So which color we should select? Big question!

I am studying Vastu and about to complete “Vastushree” a vastu related diploma course in Mumbai. Hence I suggest let us select the color, which is suitable for that person who gets the card. If we know the Birth year, it is easy to know the element of the person. Please refer to the following chart showing element and the their colors.

Water Element : Blue, Grey
Wood Element : Green, Blue
Fire Element : Red,Green
Earth Element : Brown,Black,Red
Metal Element : Grey,Brown,Black

How to make a simple handcrafted Greetings Cards for Valentine's Day

Raw material required:

1. Hand made paper (Yellow) : 22 cm x 17 cm.
2. Tinted paper (Violet) : 3 cm x 14.5 cm
3. Glossy paper (White) : 4 cm x 15.5 cm
4. Flower shapes (Dark pink) : 4
5. Metallic rings : 4
6. Paper cutter
7. Glue
8. Metal ruler

Procedure:

Cut a hand made paper (yellow) into 22 cm x 17 size. Then fold it at the center so that the size of the folded plane card is 11 cm x 17 cm.

Cut a tinted paper (violet) into 3 cm x 14.5 cm and a glossy paper (white) into 4 cm x 15.5 cm. Now we have 2 stripes, which we can paste over the hand made paper.

Using glue, first paste the white stripe at a distance of 1 cm from the folded line as shown.

Next apply the glue on the blue stripe and paste it over the white stripe area.

Now start to paste flower shapes and metallic rings as shown.

We have kept enough space at right hand side so that you can paint any message over there.

Now your own handcrafted greetings card is ready for the Valentine day celebration.

TIP : You may select different colors and sizes of paper, different flower designs to have different color combinations of your choice.

Greeting cards started out as simple slips of papyrus, that were exchanged by both the Egyptians and Chinese as messages of goodwill. As the concept of greeting cards evolved, Europeans began to send them to one another for holidays such as Valentine's Day and this occurred as early as the 1400's. Of course, these cards were handmade and expensive so not everyone could afford to send greeting cards for their holiday well-wishes.

Greeting cards really hit the mainstream in the 1850's, when commercial printing as well as the invention of the postage stamp started to allow people all over the world to send greeting cards to their loved ones. Now, greeting cards are a billion dollar business, with people purchasing and sending cards for holidays including religious celebrations, birthdays, and even just as a simple thank you or gesture of love. The two largest greeting card companies, Hallmark and American Greetings, offer cards that are perfect for any occasion, with themes and illustrations that are great for all tastes.

Of course, you don't need to buy your greeting cards in a store. Computers and home printers have made it easy to create and print out your own cards at home. Many people have also taken up paper crafts, and have taken to hand making their own greeting cards out of many different materials, with embellishments ranging from ribbons to beads. Some even go as far as to make their own paper, which is a time consuming process but definitely shows your recipient just how much you care. Hand painting and rubber stamping with ink can complete your homemade creation.

Greeting cards have evolved from an item used only by the rich to an everyday tradition. Whether you want to communicate with far-off relatives, or just let your sweetie know how much you love them greeting cards make a great (and inexpensive) way to brighten up someone's day!

Check your envelope size before you make your card.If you are making your own card check you have an envelope that will fit the size your are planing to make. Finding white or coloured envelopes the size you want might not be as easy or as cheap as you may think. There is nothing worse than making a lovely card to find the only envelope you can find that it will fit in is brown.
Don't be in a hurry, let it dry.When using ink pads, ink pens and glue you are going to have to be a little careful. Some inks dry faster than others,if you work with a card with wet ink on it you are likely to accidentally smudge you beautiful work, move on to a different card and go back to it later to put the finishing touches in.

It's never as bad as you think.Remember that your cards are hand made, they are not supposed to be perfect. The effort involved in making a hand made card gives them meaning. It is so much nicer to receive a hand made card.

Keep it simple.Simple cards are just as effective. Don't feel you have to make complicated cards.
Try not to mix stickers with stamps.When using stickers to make cards be careful about adding ink stamp art to the card, as the two together do not always complement each other.

Use colours that contrast with their backgrounds so they can be seen.When making cards it sometimes looks nicer if you put your picture, sticker or stamp on a cut out shape of coloured card that contrasts and compliments your picture. For example if you are using a dark blue background a pale blue or pale yellow card shape stuck on the front with your design on may set off the picture and make it look more interesting.

Other peoples tastes vary to your own.If you design a card and you are not sure if it looks quite right, or you think that others will not like it, do not worry, there is always someone out there who it will appeal to. Place the card to one side, you can always ask someone's else's opinion or go back to it and change it at a later date.

Do you feel satisfied after you buy a greetings card?

Do you always happy about the selection of the greetings cards you purchase in any shop or on streets side? Most of the time, the answer is “No”.

Most often you come across offset printed cards, which are not very live one. The customers do not have many choices to select.
